Logbook Servicing and Keeping Your New-Car Warranty in Australia
In Australia, you don't have to service your new car at the dealer to keep the manufacturer's warranty. A qualified independent mechanic can do your logbook servicing, as long as they follow the manufacturer's schedule, use parts and fluids that meet the required specifications, and record the service in your logbook.
Many Gold Coast drivers still believe the dealer is the only safe option. Here's what the rules actually say and how to protect yourself.
What the law says
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has made it clear that a manufacturer can't void your warranty just because an independent workshop serviced the car. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law also apply no matter who services it. What matters is that the service is done properly and to the manufacturer's specifications.
A manufacturer can refuse a warranty claim if poor workmanship or the wrong parts caused the fault. That's true no matter who did the work, which is why choosing a qualified workshop matters.
What "logbook servicing" means
Your car comes with a service schedule, in a printed logbook or a digital service record, that lists exactly what to do at each interval. A logbook service means:
- Doing every item listed for that interval, not just an oil change
- Using oils and fluids with the correct manufacturer approvals
- Using genuine or equivalent-quality parts that meet the manufacturer's specifications
- Stamping and signing the logbook, or updating the digital record, with the date, kilometres and workshop details
- Keeping an itemised invoice
Keep your paperwork
If you ever need to make a warranty claim, your records are your proof. Keep every invoice, and make sure each service is recorded on time and at the right kilometres. A service that's well overdue can give a manufacturer grounds to question a claim, so stick to the schedule.
Does it cost more at an independent workshop?
Usually not. Independent workshops often cost less than dealers for the same schedule, and you deal directly with the technician working on your car. At Prestige Servicing we quote before we start, so you know where you stand.

Recalls and warranty repairs
Recall work and warranty repairs are still done by the dealer, and they're free. Servicing with us doesn't change that. We'll let you know if we spot an open recall on your car.

Frequently asked questions
Will servicing my new car at an independent mechanic void the warranty?
No. In Australia, an independent workshop can service a new car without voiding the manufacturer's warranty, as long as the service follows the manufacturer's schedule and specifications and is recorded in the logbook.
What do I need to keep to protect my warranty?
Keep a stamped logbook or digital service record and an itemised invoice for every service, and have each service done on time.
Can you service a car with a digital logbook?
Yes. We update the manufacturer's digital service record where we have access. Otherwise we give you a detailed invoice and service record.
Who does recall work if I service with you?
Recalls and warranty repairs are done free of charge by the manufacturer's dealer. Servicing with Prestige Servicing doesn't affect them.
